Crocs flee dry krishna river, scare people

Belgaum: Drought has brought unusual and frightening visitors to villages in the Krishna basin. Fear has gripped people of Savadi, Malawad, Kusanal, Shirguppi, Mangavati, Ugar and Ainapur, among others on the river basin, especially in Athani taluk (the area represented by former minister Laxman Savadi of Porngate fame)
Besides the usual problems associated with drought, people here have to cope with dangerous crocodiles crawling into their villages as the river Krishna has dried up.
More than 30 large crocodiles and around 75 smaller crocs have been spotted in this belt. Three crocodiles appeared at Savadi village on Sunday evening when people were celebrating the Sadique Imam Jafar Urus (fair).
A 10-foot crocodile was found in the residence of gram panchayat member Khairun Jafar Mulla, about 1km from the river. Locals caught one of the crocodiles and handed it to the forest department, while two others dis
appeared into a sugarcane field. “People are terrified. We deployed youths to find the crocodiles,’’ said gram panchayat president HS Gadyal.
Gadyal said villagers had faced such problems in the past whenever the river had gone dry. “We’re waiting for water from the Koyna dam to be released. That’s the only solution for this problem,’’ he said.
