Bangalore: A 26-year-old techie from Bangalore, who was in the US on an assignment, allegedly committed suicide in a New Jersey hotel room last week. He was wanted in connection with the murder of an American woman. 
    Pawan Kumar Anjaiah, a software engineer with business and technology services major Cognizant, died allegedly of drug overdose, according to US media reports quoting Delaware state police. He died in a room in Belleville city of Wayne county in New Jersey state on June 19. 
    The body of Pawan, a resident of RT Nagar, is in a Belleville hospital, sources told TOI. With no sign of the body arriving in Bangalore though a week has elapsed since his death, Pawan’s family accused his employers of having washed their hands of the case and telling them not to speak to the media about it. But Cognizant denied this and said it was providing all assistance. 
    Pawan’s family believes he was innocent and not the kind who would be involved in any crime. Delaware police were looking for Pawan in connection with the alleged murder of Danille Mehlman, a 26-year-old teacher and mother of a four-year-old boy. Her body was found with multiple stab wounds in a hotel room in Dewey Beach, Delaware, on June 18. 
    After preliminary investigations, Delaware police sounded an alert for Pawan, who was believed to have been sharing the room with the woman and possessed a deadly weapon. A day later, Pawan’s body was found in the locked room of Belleville Motor Lodge. Pawan, who went to the US on an H-1B visa (non-immigrant) in early 2011, was scheduled to return to Bangalore next week. IN THE HOUR OF TRAGEDY

Bangalore: Software engineer from Bangalore, Pawan Kumar Anjaiah (in pic), who reportedly committed suicide in the US, was wanted in connection with the murder of an American schoolteacher. 
    When he was a resident of New Wilmington, Delaware, Pawan reportedly met Danielle Mehlman through an online dating site. According to sources, Pawan allegedly stabbed Mehlman all over her body. Police located his image from a surveillance camera at a mall and issued an alert. 
    Blood and visceral samples from Pawan’s body have been sent for forensic tests to identify the drug he consumed. Pawan was the lone son of farmer Anjaiah and Ratnagangamma based in Pavagada of Tumkur district. Pawan stayed in Bangalore with the family of his elder sister, Gunasheela.

Engg dropout jumps to death

Bangalore: A contrite 23-yearold engineering dropout committed suicide on Thursday by jumping from his fourth-floor flat in Atishi Apartments in JP Nagar 5th Phase, after his parents reprimanded him for hiding the fact that he had given up on his studies.
    Son of chartered accountant Ramesh, Rakshith R left behind a suicide note in which he profusely apologized to his parents for not going to college and wasting the money given for his studies. He asked his parents to “forgive” and “forget” him.
    Rakshith joined BE (electrical and electronic) course at Jain Institute of Engineering in 2007. But he could not clear his second semester subjects to get into the next year.
    The boy hid this fact from his parents, and for the next three years, continued to claim that he was attending college. He spent most of his time roaming around near his house and stopped going to college. Rakshith’s parents learnt about their son’s educational status a couple of days ago. They chided him and left for Udupi on Thursday. Rakshith, his sister and brotherin-law stayed back in the flat.
    After his parents left the house in the morning, Rakshith jumped from the balcony, and died immediately after crashing to the ground. The body was taken to KIMS, where a post-mortem was conducted.

Bangalore: Wary of which airport taxi to take to the city once you disembark from a flight? Well, now you have more options to choose from. The Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) on Thursday introduced its own fleet — the Airport Taxi, with a signature logo. The service will come under a uniform fare policy and will be tracked by Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
    MA Saleem, additional commissioner of police (traffic), flagged off 1,400 taxis on Thursday and 600 more will be added to the fleet by the year-end.
    These vehicles are being provided by KSTDC, Meru and Mega cab companies. They will operate 24/7 and have a parking facility in BIA. The new vehicles are an add-on to the existing fleet of 550 KSTDC and 800 Meru cabs.
    “Our aim is to try and reduce the distance between the airport and the city, both physically and mentally. Though an enormous number of cabs operate to and fro, nothing seem to be reliable, except for the BMTC airport shuttles. This is probably a first-of-the-kind endeavour taken up by an airport authority in the country to have an exclusive airport taxi service,” said Hari Marar, president, airport operations, BIA.
    The three companies will own 50% share of the vehicles. The other 50% will be owned by the driver himself. Fares have been kept uniform and regularized by the airport authority in consultation with the companies.
    “If the driver intentionally takes the passenger through longer routes to increase fares, we can find out from the GPS system the best possible route to the destination, but only if the passenger complains.
    ‘‘Even otherwise, we plan to conduct regular checks and audits of shortest routes taken by the drivers. If cases of misleading passengers come forth, disciplinary action will be initiated against the driver concerned, which could also result in cancellation of licence. Also, cab drivers cannot tamper with fare meter as they are calibrated by the respective companies,” Marar said.

Ravi Kumar CJ, an Airport Taxi driver told TOI that while applying for the job they had to produce a character certificate along with details of their academic qualification and identity proof. “It’s a 24/7 work cycle but if we work one day, we can rest the next day. We have to pay Rs 1,250 to the company per month as part of re-payment of the loans they took to buy the cars. We have been trained on how to log on to the GPS controlling machine fitted in the cars and other devices like the digitized fare machines and printers,” he said.

The service has generated employment for over 2,000 drivers and 500 other people managing the call centres and control rooms. "These drivers are trained by the respective companies to speak in English, Hindi and Kannada. BIA has also given them training on defensive driving,’’ Marar added.

Country Pays Most Bribes For Land Documents; Rich Haul After Lokayukta Raid

Bangalore: Citizens across 483 cities paid a whopping Rs 44.77 crore in bribes, to get their land documents, electricity connections, a seat in a preferred college or register their dream home. And all this in just 21 months.
Ipaidabribe, the only forum for citizens to air their grievances when they grease palms, clocked 1 million hits as on May 31, 2012. Needless to say, it is the registration department which is the most corrupt, going by the 19,863 reports filed by citizens from across 483 Indian cities. Be it getting a vehicle registered or jumping a signal, getting a marriage certificate or registering a property, nothing seems to work without under-the-table payment.
Citizens had the highest number of complaints against the registration department, where officials make a killing through bribes. In Bangalore, the department made Rs 6.29 crore, followed by the BBMP (Rs 1.69 crore) where people complained of having to grease palms to get their khatas or land documents. Although the corporation is cash-strapped, officials of BBMP and departments do cream off crores through bribes.
These figures, while being representative of the malaise affecting society, is just the tip of the iceberg. A vast majority of bribe payers would not have registered their grievances online.
In the data analyzed by the Jana Online team – an initiative of Janaagraha which handles the site – a shocking Rs 11.42 crore in bribes is lapped up by officials in 24 government departments in Bangalore. Interestingly, people claim to have even bribed gods, but the “offerings” are a mere Rs 4,200!
The education department also made a cool Rs 42.73 lakh in giving seats and certificates. The passport office is yet another place where many people are harassed to get police verification done or over the renewal of visas. As many as 43 stories have been reported on the web page with grievances of having had to pay bribes, with the department mopping up Rs 61,500.
Not very surprising, but the police department ranks only fourth as the highest bribe taking department in Bangalore, making Rs 26.65 lakh, but has recorded 1,422 complaints, the highest number reports on IPaB.

Bangalore: For the first time in Karnataka, the special Lokayukta court has sent a sitting MLA to jail for accepting a bribe. Kolar Gold Fields MLA Y Sampangi was on Saturday led into Parappana Agrahara prison after Lokayukta court judge N K Sudhindra Rao sentenced him to three and a half years’ rigorous imprisonment for accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh.
The judge also slapped on Sampangi a fine of Rs 40,000; if he doesn’t pay up, he will have to undergo six months’ additional rigorous imprisonment. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 30,000. He has been convicted on three counts under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Sampangi entered the prison at around 4pm. Around 6pm, he was shifted to the observation cell, where new inmates are kept. Once they get used to the harsh reality of their arrest, they are shifted to the barracks. As per rules, doctors checked Sampangi at the jail hospital.
“He was tense, anxious and depressed. He silently signed the papers and was moved to the VIP cell,” prison sources told STOI.
Sampangi, who earned Rs 6,667 per day as an MLA — Rs 2 lakh a month — will now earn Rs 30 a day as a convict. As per jail rules, convicts undergoing rigorous imprisonment should do jobs like carpentry, gardening, tailoring and weaving.
Unlike VIP inmates like Janardhana Reddy, Sampangi is not allowed home food.
For his jail stay, Sampangi was given a white shirt and shorts. However, in the evening, he was seen in maroon pyjamas and a white shirt. He was also given a pillow, two towels and a blanket. He will have to share an Indian-style toilet with 30 other convicts. WANTED MONEY TO FIX THINGS
Lokayukta police laid a trap for Sampangi after a KGF businessman, Hussain Moyeen Farooq, complained that the MLA had demanded a bribe of nearly Rs 5 lakh to prevent trespass on his property. The legislator had also promised to have criminal cases against Farooq closed. Sampangi was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 45,000 in cash and Rs 4.5 lakh by cheque at his Legislators’ Home accommodation. HegdeSpeak I’m happy that justice has prevailed. Bangalore: Police on Friday arrested Ranjit Krishne Gowda, 25, who allegedly hacked his former girlfriend, S Divya, 24, to death on Monday last in BTM Layout II Stage. He and his accomplice, Bhuvanesh Kutty, 25, were nabbed in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
Kutty and Ranjit had accosted Divya when she was returning from work. While Kutty remained in the rider’s seat, Ranjit had attacked Divya. The duo had then sped from the spot.
Ranjit allegedly confessed to his crime and told Mico Layout police that it was Divya who had first approached him with a marriage proposal. “I was one year senior to her in college. She first proposed to me about five years ago. My parents, too, had agreed to our marriage. But she changed after she met a man who earned more than me. Divya started avoiding me and I decided to teach her a lesson,” Ranjit told Mico Layout police. Meanwhile, Divya’s family had chosen S Pradeep, a private company employee and her sister’s brother-in-law, as the groom. On learning about it, Ranjit called Pradeep on May 19 and threatened him to keep away from Divya, police said. DCP (Southeast) PS Harsha said three teams had been set up to arrest Ranjit and Kutty. One special team traced Ranjit and Kutty to Kozikhode. “We left immediately to Kerala. But somehow, Ranjit sensed our arrival and fled from there,” Harsha said. However, the team alerted their Bangalore counterparts that the suspects were heading towards Hosur in Tamil Nadu. “They were travelling in a Kerala state transport bus. We caught hold of them in Hosur on Friday morning. On questioning, Ranjit confessed to the crime and we immediately arrested them,” Harsha added. Ranjit and Kutty were remanded to police custody. I have killed her, Ranjit told brother Soon after committing the crime, Ranjit called his brother, Vijay Kumar, and informed him that he had killed Divya. “What have you done?” was Vijay’s immediate response, the police sources said. “Vijay told Ranjit that he had ruined everyone by killing Divya. He asked Ranjit to return home immediately so that he can discuss the matter with their father,” the sources revealed.
Kutty and Ranjit abandoned the bike near Hulimavu entrance on Bannerghatta Road and fled to Kozhikhode in Kerala, about 340 km from the city. “They stayed in Kutty’s relatives’ house. But the relatives asked them to leave once they found out what the duo was running away from,” the sources said.
Kutty and Ranjit then boarded a bus to Hosur in Tamil Nadu, but police were hot on their heels. “We traced them to the bus stand and arrested them,” Mico Layout police said.

A young woman was hacked to death on Monday evening by two bike-borne assailants in full public view on 7^th Cross, BTM Layout.
    Divya S, 23, an employee of a private company, was heading to her NS Palya home at 6.45pm when the two men blocked her. They slashed her repeatedly on the neck and face with a machete before speeding away on their twowheeler, which bore no registration number. It was all over in 40 seconds, eyewitnesses told TOI.
    While some shocked passersby ran away, others tried to stop the assailants. The rush-hour traffic was blocked for nearly 30 minutes, and police had a tough time clearing vehicles and shifting Divya to Sagar Hospital on Bannerghatta Road.
    Divya succumbed to her injuries at 9pm. Her family members said she breathed her last even before she was taken to the operation theatre.
    Deputy commissioner of police, southeast, PS Harsha told TOI: “We have definite clues about the assailants and will arrest them shortly.”
    The incident took place a stone’s throw away from the IPS officers’ colony, where senior officers, including DG&IGP-in-charge A R Infant and former city police commissioner Shankar Bidari, reside.
    Divya worked as administrative head with a private footwear-manufacturing company in Koramangala. She is survived by her parents and three sisters. Hailing from Kundapur, the family shifted to Bangalore around five years ago.
    Last month, a friend of Divya is reported to have proposed to her, but she said “no” as she had already chosen her life partner, a friend of hers said. Divya’s colleagues said she moved around with the man, making him think she was in love with him. He hacked her without any mercy: eyewitness 
Bangalore: The brutal killing of Divya S, a private firm employee, on a busy street in BTM Layout sent shockwaves through the area.
    Eyewitnesses said they froze as the gory scene unfolded before them. Narayana Gowda, accountant with a private firm, was sipping tea, and close to him, two men were sitting on a grey Yamaha motorbike.
    “The place is full of eateries and it is common to see men sitting on bikes,” he said. Narayana, a resident of Kadirenahalli, said: “I saw this girl walking towards the circle. Suddenly, the man on the pillion pulled out a machete and ambushed her. He swung the machete towards her head and her skull cracked open. Blood pumped out like a fountain. I could not believe what I saw,” he said.
    The rider started the bike and they sped away towards Ragi Gudda, leaving the machete behind. “Though some of us tried to stop them, they vanished in no time. The bike had no registration number and the rider was wearing a full-face helmet,” another eyewitness told TOI. The news spread quickly, and Divya’s friends and colleagues gathered near Sagar Hospital. The main suspect appears to be a friend who had proposed to her, and who she had turned down.
    “We know the name of the man, but we’re not revealing it for investigation purposes,” a senior police officer said.

    You’ve heard this before from an assortment of netas and officials, but this time it could be closer to actually happening. Imagine travelling between Bangalore and Chennai in a bullet train at speeds of 300-320 kmph! 
    State industries minister Murugesh Nirani is pushing for everyone’s fantasy to turn into a reality. Ahead of the Global Investors’ Meet in Bangalore in June, Nirani led a delegation to Japan recently for talks on a highspeed train project with Japanese Railway authorities. 
    Speaking to BANGALORE MIRROR, Nirani said, “The project has been conceptualised in three phases —between Mysore and Chennai via Bangalore, between Bangalore and Belgaum via Davanagere and Hubli, and between Bangalore and Gulbarga.”

A MINI-JAPAN NEAR BANGALORE 
    Bangalore’s urban agglomeration is going to soon get even more cosmopolitan, with the state government thinking of setting up a township exclusively for Japanese expats on 1,000 acres of land. 
    With as many as 196 Japanese projects coming to Karnataka, and leading Japanese carmakers likely to pump in around Rs 10,000 crore in the coming months, setting up a mini-Japan near the city to cater to the needs of Japanese executives and workers is inevitable. 
    The government, in association with the Japanese government, also plans to set up a Japanese-language school in Bangalore to help Kannadigas learn Japanese and improve their chances of employment in Japanese firms, an industries department official said. 
    According to the minister, the state government has offered 1,000 acres of land at Vasantha Narasapura, Vemagal and a location between Tumkur and Sira. Called the Japanese Industrial Township, it will have residential accommodation, restaurants, pagodas, hospitals and schools. 
    Rs 200 crore. It will be a purely Japanese venture on a BOT (build-operate-transfer) basis. “The proposal will be placed before the chief minister and thereafter before the state high-level clearance committee,” he said. 
    If and when the bullet train project does come to fruition, the difference in travel time will be nothing short of startling — just two hours from Mysore to Chennai via Bangalore, as against the seven hours taken on the same route by our current fastest train, the Shatabdi. 
    The Karnataka delegation had the chance to interact with Dr Diazo Nozawa, a leading train designer and Japanese Railways board member who is seen as a technological ‘Visvesveraya’ in his country. The team also experienced first-hand the thrill of travelling from Tokyo to Osaka in the high-speed Shinkansen train. The train touches speeds of 320 kmph and has only one driver and two ticket collectors. Since its launch way back in 1964, it has not had a single accident. 
    According to Nirani, the high-speed train project will provide a boost to the state’s economic growth.

    College canteens have been much more than eating places – where you chill out, gossip, debate, and also have some entertainment. These days they are not just chill zones for Gen-Y, the space is being used for something as 
novel as screening movies. 
    From conducting pot-pourri to quiz competitions, from screening F1 races to movies like ‘3 Idiots’ and from organising club meetings to jam sessions, it all happens at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore cafeterias. We also have our share of entertainment. We watch cricket matches in our canteen, have match analysis and also celebrate birthdays here. It is a one-stop destination for entertainment,” says Dheer Bhatnagar, a student of NLSUI. 
    Madhavi Nair, a third year student at Christ University, feels that a large well-ventilated open space encourages experimentation and let loose an artist’s creativity. “I love painting and sketching, while sitting in the cafeteria. Although most of the times, my sketches are for college projects, I also draw abstracts. I draw people sitting around and sipping hot tea or coffee,” says Madhavi. She says that sketching while chatting makes it far more interesting. “I love drawing while I am surrounded by my friends. Moreover, ours is a green campus and it adds to the wonderful experience,” she says. 
    While Madhavi loves to sketch, Dileep Mallick, her classmate, strums his guitar in the canteen. Whether playing Led Zeppelin, Pear Jam or Nirvaana, Dileep’s tunes create a different ambience in the canteen altogether “It is a part of my daily activity now. I love singing and playing guitar and drums in the canteen space. Apart from the fact that the cafeterias provide an open space, my music also helps me in loosening the social barrier. I get to know more people and I also get response to my music,” says Dileep.

Bangalore: All was well with 24-year-old S Vinay Kumar till the day he was diagnosed with incurable congenital glaucoma. Rough days began as Vinay started losing his vision every day and finally lost it completely in 2007. “I was diagnosed with the disease in 2004 and went completely blind by 2007. I was working with a private firm as customer service representative and was asked to work from home as I had developed a completely restricted mobility by then, due to the vision loss. It was a dark world outside,” says Vinay. 
    Confined within four walls, Vinay was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, when he came across International Agency for Rehabilitation-India (IARI). “I had lost all hopes of leading a normal life. Then I stumbled upon this organization. It was like discovering life all over again. The organization provided a personal trainer, who trained me and helped me in getting my mobility back. Right frombeing independent in case of nature calls to handling dishes and interacting with the outside world, the training gave me back almost everything I had lost,” says Vinay. 
    There are thousands like Vinay across the country, who have been benefited by the organisation’s services. 
    Registered in February 1987 under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, the visionaries, who sketched the objectives of IAR-I, say that the organization was founded with the main aim of creating opportunities for people with disabilities so that they could be integrated into schools and colleges and gain independence. 
    “We wanted to come up with an organization that could provide different types of disability services under one roof. To enable people with disability to be financially strong to get into the mainstream,” says R Anand, administrator, IAR-I. 
    “We are currently working with 60 villages and eight slums in and around Bangalore. We work under three guidelines: prevention, intervention and rehabilitation. Prevention is all about healthcare and preventing occurrence of disability. We organize a number of healthcare camps on annual basis. Moreover, in order to integrate physically-disabled children with normal children, we organize a summer camp every year. The camp incorporates 70 children and helps in building up their confidence,” says Anand. 
    IAR-India thrives on funds from private organizations along with other associations. “We are associated with organizations like National Association for Blind (NAB), EnableIndia, National Association of Physically Disabled (APD), Modi Eye Hospital, Mahavir Jain Netralaya, along with some unregistered groups of volunteers.
